Where you may see a random collection of bottle caps, I see...potential caterpillar!
This little cutie was inspired by a site that gave me lots of inspiration. It's in French, which I'm trying to learn (and have been for years now!) but the photos are just amazing and ooze creativity!
Supplies:
- Bottle caps (we used 5)
- 2 googly eyes
- Cardstock (various colors)
- pipe cleaners (ours came from CraftProjectIdeas.com, available at WalMart from Horizon Group)
- Screwdriver
- Glue
- Beads
To make the holes in the bottle caps was the hardest part for me. Maybe it's my lack of finesse with tools or just a general impatience to get the task done, but I ended up cutting myself with the screwdriver. I found that the flathead screwdriver worked best. Use the smallest one that you have and place it where you want your hole. Then turn it, pressing firmly, as you would if you were screwing in a nail. It's not difficult, but it takes a bit of time. Definitely a task for grown-ups!
When that's done (phew!), I traced the bottle caps onto colorful pieces of cardstock and cut out the circles. Tacky glue held the circles onto the bottle caps pretty well (a glue gun would do even better).
I threaded the pipe cleaner through the bottle caps, adding a shiny purple bead in between each cap. Then I cut up some brown pipe cleaner and added it above each bead as silly legs.
Googly eyes - can't forget the googly eyes! Tacky glue kept these on as well. Finally, he was still missing something. Antennae! I curled some craft wire (pipe cleaners would work here, too) and hot glued those on his little head (don't worry - didn't hurt him one bit!).
It ended up not being easy enough for a preschooler to do as I had hoped, but a slightly older child could help with a lot of it. And any age can play with the fun result!
