Recycled Paper Bird's Nest Craft

We recently had the honor of playing host to a robin's nest in our backyard. It was fascinating to watch the babies grow (from a distance, of course) and the protective parents feed them and shoo away any potential predators (unfortunately, this included us!). When I'd go in the backyard to do anything, Mr. Robin would follow me, staring hardly at me until I left.  Still, seeing the babies learn to fly and eventually leave the nest was exciting. I just loved it!

So for this month's Project: Recycle & Create, we worked on making a nest craft from scrap paper. Not as interesting as the real thing, perhaps, but still fun to make!

Supplies:
  • Scrap paper (we used newspaper)
  • Construction paper
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors

Originally I wanted to use shredded paper for this one. But then I remembered - our shredder is LOUD. And I hate loud. So, cut-up paper it was. (This was also a bonus for Kay's fine motor skills!)

We still had one of our spring birds hanging around, and he was the perfect little guy to make our nest for. So we placed him on the construction paper and just randomly started gluing on strips of newspaper.

Note to self: Having opposable thumbs makes nest-building 100% easier, I'd imagine!

Quick, easy...and now our whimsical bird has a place to call home!
