I know what I want to be when I grow-up - a wand-maker! Look out, Ollivander - you're going to have some competition!
I don't know if I've ever mentioned it, but I'm a total Harry Potter nerd! I've read the books about a zillion times each, watched the movies more times than I care to share, and I look forward to when Kay gets into them, too! (If she does...at this point the idea of her reading an 800 page book is right up there with her getting a unicorn for her birthday!)
But even Kay, who has only seen the second movie but has surely heard me talking about the series, was eager to flip through this new book - (affiliate link) "The Unofficial Guide to Crafting the World of Harry Potter" by Jamie Harrington - EEK!
The pencil wands managed to attract the attention of us both, but we decided to change it up just a little.
Supplies:
- Dowels (ours came from CraftProjectIdeas.com)
- Glue gun
- Acrylic paint
- Sponge brush
- Glitter paint (optional)
We started off by heating up the glue gun. Kay is an old pro at this by now. We made random designs on one end of the stick - some globs here, some lines there - just to add a bit of texture.
I think Kay's favorite part about using the glue gun is the quick drying time. She is not a girl who likes to wait! (Nor is her mama, for that matter.)
Next we got our paint ready. (I just love these acrylics!)
I chose dark brown and black and mixed them together to make what was, to my mind, "wand tree" colors. I thought about going with a pink, but for this batch I wanted authentic. (Authentic magic wands? Sure, why not?!)
When they were dry, they were still missing that special something that would turn them from a stick into a wand.
I found the solution in the glitter paint I had picked up at the craft store. One coat added a splash of glitter, making the regular dowel into an official magic wand! Even Hogwarts would accept these babies...I'm pretty sure!
