Kay is at a point now where she's bringing home weekly spelling words that she can't even read, much less spell.
My thinking (and remember, I'm no educator!) is that if she's familiar with the words, she'll come to know what they're supposed to look like and that will make spelling them easier down the road. But first she needed to be able to read the words. So that's what we focus on first.

Last year for Easter I, um, I mean, the Easter Bunny, brought Kay a Penguin Popper . I had big plans of the learning games we could do with that thing.
Confession: This is the first one that we've actually done with it.
Supplies:
Penguin Popper (or something similar to "knock down" the words)
Clothespins
Index cards
When she came home with her spelling list on Monday, I wrote the words on pieces of paper (index cards would have been sturdier but we were fresh out). Then came the trickiest part of all - trying to stand up the clothespins to hold the words. Apparently those dollar store clothespins are not as even on the bottom as they want you to believe!
(Stuart the Minion clothespin standing on top of Kay's homemade recycled robot. Welcome to our odd home!)
Part scavenger hunt, part knocking things over - she was in her glory! Sadly those Poppers, while awesome for fine motor skills, are not so great for aiming. She kept at it, though (I just love her persistence!).
Eventually I brought out the foam sword and said, "Of course, you could always knock them down with this, too!" She still tried a few times with the Popper, but eventually ended up using the sword to knock those stubborn words down.
You'll be happy to know that they were all vanquished and our home was safe from invading spelling words for the rest of the afternoon! (Phew!)
