Abstract Tree Art

So many birthday party supplies are just wasted. Last year we paid $20 for a pinata that was entertaining for all of 5 minutes. This year I bought Kay a beautiful rainbow tutu on Etsy that she didn't even wear because it was "too poofy". (Eye-roll.)

And don't get me started on birthday banners. Last year we had a beautiful Frozen one that just got tossed away as we were cleaning up. (After 2 hours with a roomful of 6 year olds, I am not in the mood to recycle, reduce and reuse!)
This year we got a colorful My Little Pony birthday banner courtesy of Oriental Trading but it was just too cute to part with.

We actually ended up making 2 projects with this sign. (Not bad for something that was destined for the recycle bin!) The first one was...wait for it...a tree.

I've been admiring this work of art over at Crafts by Amanda and decided to give it a try with this birthday sign. I started out by cutting out the circles. Yep, by hand. I didn't want to have to figure out the placement to use the Cricut (way too much thinking...hehe) so I traced three different sizes of circles onto the back of the sign, focusing on the most colorful spots, and cut them out. (Quick tip: by doing multiple layers at once it went much quicker!)

Then I cut out a tree trunk base with the Cricut (got to use it after all!). I used vinyl so I didn't even have to glue it on - just stick and done.

Then Kay and I got gluing together. It didn't matter where we put the circles; in this case, random works best.

When it was done, we had ourselves a colorful abstract work of art! (Check out the second project we did with this sign, too...easy DIY thank you cards!)
