My daughter has crazy, beautiful curly hair - the only one in our family with this attribute. Everywhere we go people comment on it and right now she has no problem with it. But I can foresee a day when the hair that everyone else thinks is enviable in something she despises.

Enter: The Magic Poof, by Stephen Hodges and illustrated by T. Kyle Gentry. In the story, Ange-Marie has wild, curly hair...that's magic. It can talk, be silly, make faces, generally just act wacky. She is proud of her magic poof, even as it transforms into various outrageous styles and expressions. However, when picture day rolls around, she wants her magic poof to just be regular hair. Will it comply?
Ange-Marie is a confident African-American character that parents can be proud to have their children emulate. The wonderful illustrations bring the poof to life as a character in its own right.
P is for Preschooler:
I look forward to the next Magic Poof book, which the author is reportedly working on, as well as an animated television series.
This book turns something that can make a child stand out - wild, curly hair - into an asset, something to embrace and be proud of, something special. And that's a message worth sharing!
