DIY Glitter Ornaments

The Halloween candy is out. The Thanksgiving aisle at the craft store is fully decked out. But Kay hasn't even gone back to school yet.

Does that mean it's too early to start the Christmas crafts?
Homemade glitter ornaments - you won't believe how easy they are to make yourself!

Not in my house, not for this mama. And certainly not when they're gifts. (That's my excuse, and I'm sticking with it!)

These ornaments were actually really easy to make, even though they look pretty awesome! I was surprised they came out so well, actually, because I tried a similar technique with mason jars and it was a major fail. So glad this one wasn't!

I made both glitter and acrylic paint ornaments. Let's start with the paint ones.

Supplies:
  • Glass balls
  • Acrylic paint
  • Plastic cup
Three things - that's really all you need here! Squeeze in the paint and swirl it around until the ornament is completely covered in your color. This takes more paint than I expected. Add in what you think you'll need, and then add a bit more!

When the inside of the ornament is coated with paint, place it in a plastic cup (or whatever else you have handy) with the opening facing down. This allows all the excess paint to drip out. (Then, if you're a saver like me, you can add that excess paint right back into the bottle. Hey, no need to waste perfectly good paint here!)

Let dry. (I left mine for upwards of 24 hours to be sure. The one I let dry for 2 days came out the best.)

Now on to glitter! (These are my faves!)

Supplies:
  • Glass balls
  • Pledge floor cleaner (trust me on this one!)
  • Ultra Fine Glitter
  • Plastic cup

Pledge floor cleaner for crafting? Hey, it works! I sprayed the cleaner into the glass ball ornaments and then moved it around until the inside was completely coated. It will look cloudy, but that's okay - it dries clear!

I poured out a bit of the excess Pledge. To add the glitter, I made a makeshift funnel with scrap paper and just started pouring the glitter in the ball with that. Again, use the same technique to coat the inside of the glass ball with glitter.

Then place it in the plastic cup, opening-side down, to let the extra ooze out. This one doesn't take quite as long to dry, but I still left it a day or so.

My verdict - only one of the ornaments with paint came out perfectly. Most of them had large spaces where the paint seemed to just dry up. I may still try to salvage them by covering the blank spots.

The glitter ones are just beautiful - I'm so loving them! In fact, I plan on picking up some more glitter to try different colors.
