Whimsical Birds Craft

The calendar says spring but the weather tells a different story. (Snow? In April? Really?!) These adorable birds will cheer you up any time of the year!

There's many things I look forward to in the spring. Kay can play outside more, the colorful flowers blooming, the beautiful cherry blossoms at our nearby park. But probably my favorite are the birds. I love hearing them sing again, emerging from wherever they've been hiding out quietly all winter, and watching them build their nests.

So these whimsical birdies are perfect to tide us over as we wait for spring to arrive for real.

Supplies:

I started out by cutting out the bird(-ish) shapes in craft foam. (Whimsical in this case also means kind of abstract!)  I decided to use patterned scrapbook paper for the wings (these birds are certainly unique!). Once those are cut out, you just need a triangle nose, er, beak - I used cardstock to cut those out.

I love assembling crafts like this, watching them go from "random pile of supplies" to "hey, now it looks like something!" Of course, they only *really* looked like birds when they got their googly eyes.

I knew I wanted them to have dangly legs, so I used hemp thread. Initially I made them way too long (like, freakishly long!) so I trimmed them down and added buttons to the ends.

I remembered to add some thread to hang the yellow bird. To be honest, our crafts don't usually get hung up. Kay does them and then she's done with them. Give them away, throw them in the trash, she doesn't care as soon as she walks away from the table. And then there's me who wants to save it ALL!

These were too cute to just toss away though. They definitely made the hang-them-up cut!
