Pumpkin Number Line

I have been doing a lot of research into kinesthetic learning lately. I've always known that being active is how Kay learns best but, unfortunately, it's not a learning style that meshes well with a classroom environment. By the time she gets home from school, she isn't interested in doing anything she deems "educational".
Get moving with an active number line - great for kinesthetic learners!

  Especially not homework.

So I've been seeking ways to make homework less painful for her and hopefully bring back that spark of loving to learn that seems to be flickering out lately.

This number line has been a big help for math homework. She gets to move around, visually see the numbers add up (she's working on addition but it would be just as good for subtraction!) and - most importantly - she isn't just mindlessly filling in a worksheet.

Supplies:
  • Craft foam in pumpkin shapes (pre-made or cut your own)
  • Sharpie

Set up is simple. I was going to cut out pumpkin shapes from craft foam, but then I found pre-made pumpkins at Michaels' that were just perfect for this. I wrote numbers 1-10 on them with a Sharpie. That's it.

Ridiculously easy, right? That's what I was aiming for!

Other ways to use these:
  • Take away one of the numbers and see if your child can guess what's missing.
  • Sort the numbers in order.
  • Scavenger hunt - hide the pumpkins around the house and when your child finds them all, encourage them to arrange them in numerical order.

This is a perfect idea for the kindergarten age group. Check out these other posts that kindergartners will love:
