How many ways can you think of to turn spelling into a physical activity?
That's been my challenge lately - finding ways to work on Kay's weekly spelling list in a fun way (or at least a way that's more fun than copying them 5 times!).
I recently got a burst of inspiration as I watched her roll and flip and tumble on her new tumbling mat...spelling Twister!
Originally I wanted to write on the mat with dry erase markers, but I was too afraid that we'd permanently have letters on there that wouldn't come off. So I settled for tossing some foam alphabet shapes on the mat.
Here's how we did it:
I would throw the letters of the word onto the mat, placing a few extras to make it trickier. Her challenge was to spell out the word as she put her hand or foot on each letter. A hand on F, another on I and a foot on T - yay! It's "fit"!
Fortunately, her spelling words are all 4 letters or less so far. When she works up to words like "success", well, we'll have to find another idea!
Disclosure: We received this complimentary tumbling mat from ECR4Kids. All opinions and ideas are my own.
