B is for...bakery! We had some fun with this pretend play and craft idea rolled into one!
Hmm...smell the aroma of baking cardboard cookies?
Okay, so it's not exactly gingerbread, but these were a fun craft to make and inspired some great imaginary play!
What we used:
- Craft foam sheets
- Gems
- Brown construction paper
- Glitter glue
I cut the construction paper into little pieces ahead of time (the dogs kept coming over and sniffing it as if they were hoping I was working on a treat for them!) and set out the finished "chocolate chips" in a little bowl, next to the "sprinkles" (shiny gems). I also traced circles on the craft foam and cut out the shapes of the "cookies" so that all was ready for the when bakery opened shop.
I admit, I was kind of hoping Kay would want to wear her baking apron (so cute!). I set it out near the work space, but it sat there, ignored. Ah, well!
She went at it right away, grabbing the "frosting" (that would be glitter glue) first, because it's her favorite. Let's just say, these cookies were very well frosted!
Then she added the extras - "This one is for me because I'm putting a lot of chocolate chips on it!"
Whenever one was finished, she put it on the baking tray (that is, a plastic cover) and put it into the imaginary oven. They she'd bring them over to me, where I'd pretend they were too hot and were burning my fingers!
When they were dry, I thought it would be fun to bring out the cash register (and maybe sneak in a little math...shhh!) but she was completely uninterested in that idea. Maybe another day. (Sometimes I think she can scent out when I'm trying to get too educational with her!)
