When Kay started kindergarten, I was eager to start sending notes in her lunch box. However, she could only read a few simple sight words, such as at, mop, little, and had. It's not easy to write a lunchbox note using those ("I had a little mop"?)
Fortunately, she also knew "I love you" but I didn't want to write that every day.
So what can you add to the lunchbox of a pre-reader?

- XOXO
- "I love you"
- Name and a smiley face
- Just a heart, or I <heart> U
- Stick people holding hands (of course, if you can draw more than stick people, go for it! Sadly stick figures are the pinnacle of my drawing abilities.)
- Kay likes word puzzles like a picture of a rock and a picture of a star - rockstar!
- A picture cut out from a magazine or printed off the computer of a favorite character.
I also put together some printables so you can just print and add them to a backpack. Add a name to personalize it and you're done!

Even though Kay can read a bit more now, I still like to add these cute ones to her bag from time to time. Those hippos always make me smile; I like to think they have the same effect on her!
