Make Your Own Doctor's Kit

  This month's Poppins Book Nook theme is "When I Grow Up" and I had the activity ready before the book was chosen! This is something we've had around for about a year and it's still not gotten old, and it meshed perfectly with our choice of a book, "When I Grow Up" by Mercer Meyer. (Love Mercer Meyer books! Just saying. )

   When I first put this together, Kay was 4 1/2. She seemed too old for the plastic doctor's kit from the stores, so I put together our own kit, with "real" things she could use. Since then different things have been thrown in (we've added face masks from the dollar store that have been a real hit!) 

  It's essentially made up of just little things I found around the house that I threw together. There's bandages of various kinds, tweezers, Q-Tips, medical tape, rubber gloves, tongue depressors (just jumbo craft sticks!), a magnifying glass and hand-sanitizer gel. I put in a key chain flashlight and a medicine dropper from the medicine cabinet. And of course a pad of paper and a pen, for records and "prescriptions". 

  My father was able to give us a stethoscope. I put it all in a first aid container we weren't using, but anything would work. (In my experience, they don't really care what it's in! )

   I admit, I was saving this for one of those days when I needed her to play quietly for 5 minutes. This did the trick. She loves it!  

I think she gets a kick out of it being "real" medical stuff. Her favorite by far is the medicine dropper, which she uses as a pretend needle. But she's also fond of wrapping up limbs (be they human or of the plastic doll variety) with bandages.
