This is another of those that has been lingering in my "ready-to-be-posted" queue for ages. But I wanted to share it, bad photographs and all, because Kay really had a lot of fun with it and it was easy to put together. So ignore the pictures and focus on the activity. Deal? :)
I got a square box in the mail that I thought would just be perfect as...a die! And with jumbo-size dice, of course it would have to be a moving game of some kind. So I went online to see what I could find and what I came up with was this fun game from Growing a Jeweled Rose. Using that as inspiration, I covered the box in construction paper (the back of wrapping paper would have been so much easier, but I didn't think of that; plus, this way was more colorful). Then I wrote a simple action on each side - leap, spin, clap, bow (later changed to shake), kick, hop. (Also great as sight words!)
I wanted to use a regular-sized die to tell us how many times to do each thing (and to add some counting to the game) but I couldn't find any, so I improvised by writing numbers on the bottom of glass gems with a permanent marker. To play the game, we would throw the die, then reach in a pull out a glass gem number.
Okay, 3...kicks!
2...leaps!
6...spins! (Dizzy much?)
Kay loved it! I figure if I change the actions every once in awhile, this will be a great way to use up some energy on rainy or wintry days. Taking it outside would be fun too!
