Egg Carton Fairy Houses | P is for Preschooler
Kay got a letter from her pen pal mentioning a "fairy garden" in their backyard, and Kay's imagination went into overload. Since then she always wants me to write, "Have you seen any real fairies?" and "Can you send me a real fairy in the mail?"
While we made a fairy house last summer, that's apparently long-since been forgotten. I thought it would be fun to make little houses out of egg cartons for pretend play. Kay instantly thought of them as fairy houses. Either way, little houses we were making.

We painted over the egg cartons with acrylic paint from our friends at CraftProjectIdeas.com. Kay kept changing her mind about the color she wanted, so her's is a variety of colors, making it uniquely her own. You can see from the look of concentration that she wanted to get this just right for any potential homeless fairies that may take up residence there!

When they were dry (guess who's took the longest?!) I painted on a little door on mine, and Kay tried to do the same. Then, since these might be patriotic fairies, I added a little flag to the top of mine (actually for cupcakes, but just the right size for this, too!). Kay also had a flag, but she got a little carried away with making the holes.

"Instead you have a sunroof!" I said cheerfully when the hole was too big for her flag. I had to explain what that was, and added, "Of course it's also a rain-roof, and the little fairies will get wet when it rains." She found this hilarious. I love that she laughs at my dumb jokes!

By the way, if you know of any fairies looking for a place to stay, you know where to send them!
