Apple Experiment for Preschoolers

   We do love our food science over here. After working with chocolate and marshmallows, this one is one of the healthier options when it comes to food experiments. 

  We eat apples all year round, but Kay hates when they start to turn brown after being exposed to the air (doesn't everyone?!). So for this quick experiment, I asked her what we could do to stop an apple from turning brown. 

She suggested putting it in the fridge. Good thinking. I suggested we try some lemon juice, too, and see what that did. So we had 4 slices of apples...

 - one with a squirt of lemon juice and left on the table, 
 - one plain one left on the table
 - one with a squirt of lemon juice and put in the fridge
 - one plain one put in the fridge. 

  We put them on napkins and wrote if they had lemon juice on them or not, and waited. (May I just add here that I was pretty proud of her "put it in the fridge" idea? It doesn't take much to impress this mama!)

  We checked them, then checked again. (Fortunately she had the rest of the apple as a snack so the waiting wasn't quiet so painful!) Finally we put them all together and I asked her what was her conclusion - which one was the least brown? 

  And the winner was...squirt of lemon juice and in the fridge! The one with lemon juice that was left on the table came in a close second.
