We're just starting to get into sight words. What started as a little experiment of my own (would Kay be interested in learning words?) continues because - yes, she wants to, much to my surprise. I'm keeping it super-simple and low-key, no pressure added. I don't need her to be an early reader, I just want her to want to learn. So far, so good.
So in keeping it playful for her, I'm having fun myself coming up with active ways to practice "her words." Since Kay loves playing with plastic Easter eggs, of course we'd incorporate them into this too.
I wrote a few easy sight words on index cards, and then wrote their letters on small squares cut from construction paper. Then it was hiding time.
Now we play egg hunt like other kids play hopscotch - all the time. Usually I put cereal in it, because it's just boring to find an egg with nothing in it. This time she was disappointed at first that her findings weren't edible (even though I explained it ahead of time!) but she soon got into the game and went looking for more.
What fun ways do you use plastic eggs?
