Welcome to Fine Motor Fridays! This week, I'm happy to be teaming up with Stir the Wonder, Craftulate, Little Bins for Little Hands, LalyMom, Racheous and School Time Snippets to bring you some fun fine motor activity ideas!
P is for Preschooler: Bean Chute / Marble Run
This was a wonderful idea I got from Little Hands Big Work. I've written before of my fascination with marble run-type projects. The only difference with this one was...it actually worked! Alert the media - I made something the turned out as I expected!

I cut off the top of some soda bottles for funnels and used toilet paper rolls and a paper towel roll as tunnels and ramps. I decided on using a cork board so I could just attach everything with pins (and some packing tape for extra support). This also made it easier for Kay to move things around if she wanted to experiment. I put out some kidney beans and we were set to play.

Kay loved scooping the beans into the top funnel and hearing them rattle down the tubes. Truth be told, I was playing along too! She also just liked the sound of the beans landing in the bin I put at the bottom to catch them.

Eventually a marble was brought out and she had to send that down the chutes too. This added an extra fun dimension because the marble would circle around the funnels before finally going down the hole. Awesome! We experimented to see which would go down quicker - kidney beans, marbles or pom poms? The marble won because "it's heavier," she told me.
Even with the packing tape to secure it, this was a one-time activity; it wasn't sturdy enough to last any longer. But now that I know how to do it, I'll be making more of these when we're stuck inside this winter! All that scooping and pouring is great for the hand muscles!
