I had wanted to make a "pond" in Kay's water table for awhile and I had all the supplies just waiting for the right day. Well, the right day came. I set it up using large and small glass gems, lily pads cut out from foam sheets, smooth stones, a family of rubber ducks and some little plastic frogs we had around the house.
It turned out to be the perfect day for it, too, because it was the very day that Kay got a new book as a gift from her grandmother: "Froggy Learns To Swim" by Jonathan London. After reading it (twice) we went outside to the "pond." I thought she'd use the little frogs to act out the story, but instead she acted it out with...the ducks!
Mostly she liked that the ducks would squirt water if you squeezed them and that the stones made a satisfying splash when dropped in the water.
She did a lot of pretend play with the duck family, which I was glad about because she doesn't often do the imagination thing on her own. She usually wants me to make up a story and she'll play along. This time it was all her. She even lined up the glass gems and had them "dive" in.
Finally, the duck family got to take a boat ride on her sandal.
I have a feeling she'll be asking for this one again!
