I've found a new hobby!
I admit, I started thinking up "random acts of kindness" for Kay. I thought it would be a good example for her and hopefully something that would stick with her as she gets older.
I admit, I started thinking up "random acts of kindness" for Kay. I thought it would be a good example for her and hopefully something that would stick with her as she gets older.
But I also did it for a more selfish purpose as well. We all get wrapped up in the comparison game sometimes and I'm certainly no exception. So whenever I start to feel jealous, my newest method is to think of something kind to do. And - what do you know? - it actually helps!
Kindness rocks are nothing new. The beautiful thing is there are as many ways to do it as there are rocks in the world. This time we chose a simple way (and the fact that we reused clothing to do it makes it a perfect fit for this month's Project: Recycle & Create!)
Supplies:
Supplies:
- Old shirt or pants (scrap fabric works wells, too!)
- Scissors
- Rocks (smooth works best)
- Mod Podge
- Paint (optional)
- Glitter (optional)
We started out with an old pair of pants that had outlived their intended purpose. Too many holes to wear - but just perfect for crafting with! (See how my mind works?) I folded the fabric in half and cut out heart shapes. (Kay wanted nothing to do with this step, but she was happy to make snips in the pants, for whatever reason!)
It's easier to draw the heart shape and then cut but, well, I was lazy. Maybe that's why quite a few came out looking not-so-much like hearts. Still, we had enough to work with.
We gathered some rocks from our yard. My husband's been doing to work out there so it wasn't hard to find some decent ones.
After cleaning them, we added a coating of Glorious Gold. (This is my new favorite color paint!) My other favorite thing about this paint - it dries super-quick! (Definitely a plus with my impatient kiddo!)
We spread Mod Podge on the painted rocks and then stuck the fabric hearts on. (This was way easier than trying to add the adhesive to the fabric!) A couple of the hearts had dark spots from where the Mod Podge seeped through, so we added some glitter paint to cover those up. No project in our house is complete without a little glitter anyway!
When they dried, they were ready for us to drop around town. I keep a couple of these in my pocket book now and we leave them out whenever we think of it. I love that we got to craft together and spread smiles together - definitely my new favorite hobby!
