DIY Recycled Plastic Pendants

We tried three - count 'em, three! - different projects with plastic bottles with month. All but this one turned out to be a fail. On the plus side, we sure did a lot of reusing of recyclables!

Supplies:
  • Plastic bottles
  • Tissue paper
  • Glue (School glue is fine; Mod Podge is a plus)
  • String
  • Beads
  • Hole punch

I started by cutting out the clear sections from the plastic bottles we had; clear meaning no label and thus no sticky glue residue to try to remove! Then we traced circles with a stencil onto the plastic. Kay and I both added glue to the circles and randomly stuck tissue paper on top.

The secret is to cover the entire circle, a goal we didn't always reach but...well, good enough. This was a much easier way to do it than cutting out the circles first and then putting on the tissue paper.

When the glue was dried, we cut out the circles and had colorful plastic shapes. At this point, I still didn't know what we were actually going to do with them. Kay suggested gluing them to paper. I liked it and she took a few to make her art. Then I thought...necklaces!

Using a paper punch, we poked holes in each circle and then tied string to hold it in place. (We used both braiding cord from Craft Project Ideas and hemp that we had on hand.) Then we added some beads to give it a little weight (plastic circles are not very heavy!).

Seven-year-old Kay is getting to be quite the little fashionista - if fashionista means "very picky about what she'll wear" - but even she wore one with pride. Guess after those fails we finally hit on a win!
