Plastic Eggs Stacker STEM Challenge

Plastic eggs. They don't exactly scream out "STEM activity!"

Or at least, they didn't. Until I came across this post from Math Geek Mama and was inspired to try something similar with the fake eggs that are so ubiquitous about this time of year.
Kay loves carrying around her tape measure. It came in her very own tool box she got for Christmas and, aside from the hammer (obviously!), it's her favorite tool. Not that she uses it for measuring so much. It's more like pull out the tape, push the button and watch it zoom back in, and repeat.

But for this activity, she got to use the tape measure for its intended purpose.

Supplies:
  • Plastic eggs
  • Measuring tape or ruler

This is a quick and easy idea and set-up is non-existent. All you need at the supplies and an inquisitive kiddo and you're set. Challenge them to see how high they can stack the eggs. Measure the finished tower and then see if you can beat it!

Stacking the eggs is not as easy as it might seem. We used both the tops and bottoms of the eggs and the different sizes make the structure a bit wobbly - an extra challenge! As a kid I would have gotten frustrated with the whole thing but Kay is of a more determined nature and kept at it.

We didn't, but it's a good idea to record the sizes as you build. That way it's easier to remember (and writing practice is always a plus!).

It's time again for the Kindergarten Blog Hop! This month we were working with an Easter theme (hence the eggs!)
