Last year Kay won this awesome pail with her name on it for Halloween. We've used it to store things all year and I've been telling myself I was going to try to recreate it as some point.

These pails I used are much smaller than the one that inspired me, but they make perfect favors for the upcoming Halloween Girl Scout party. I made them in neutral colors rather than distinctly Halloween so that they could be used all year round.

I tried a lot of different ways to get the letters on the pails - and met with a lot of failure along the way. Acrylic paints...nope, scratches right off. Stencils were a bust because of the awkward shape of the pail. And light-colored Sharpies had a colored-in look I wasn't going for. It came down to just trying it free-hand. I went into it with the intention that, if worse came to worse, hopefully no one would notice the letters once the pails were filled with candy!
Fortunately they turned out pretty good. It was annoying trying to write on a curved surface, but the letters are a least recognizable and, in a lot of cases, I even like them (gasp!). I added colorful dots with Sharpies as well for decoration. The dots reminded Kay of gumballs. Sure, I'll go with that.
I think these will be a hit at the party...and I won't even need the candy to distract from the lettering!
P.S. Cool trick I learned: If you make a mistake with Sharpies on a tin pail, rubbing alcohol will erase it completely so you can start again!
