Kay has always looked at paint as more of a sensory experience than a creative endeavor. Sure, the older she gets, the more effort she puts into making a "picture" but sometimes she still likes to tap into her inner toddler and play in the paint.
But that's what process art is all about! Although she does take the messier route, process art is more about the exploration than about the finished product. She has this down to a T!
There are only two ways I let her do this kind of "whole-body" painting that she loves - outside or in the bath tub. On this day, she preferred the latter.
There was no making our own special bathtub paint; we just used washable temperas. I squeezed some colors we had extras of into a muffin tin that we use for this sort of thing and she was off.
She painted her face, and then made stripes on her legs, saying she was Daniel Tiger. She smeared those colors all over the wall, as high and far as she could reach and made hand-prints. Finally she discovered that she could use her finger to make letters and squiggles in the wet paint.

Fortunately, this is one of the few activities where clean-up is part of the fun (how often can you really say that?!). She she rinsed off in the shower she got to use the handheld nozzle to wash away the paint - and I was happy to see how easy it was removed. Ten minutes later, there was no sign of the messy fun she'd had.
Welcome to the Process Art Challenge, hosted by Samantha at Stir the Wonder! Process art is any craft activity that is more focused on the technique rather than a finished product. It's about exploring and experimenting and it's our favorite kind of art, so we're excited to be a part of this monthly series!
This month we're working with paint. See how my co-hosts have experimented...and maybe be inspired to try a project of your own!
