Invitation to Create with Straws and Glue

I thought this was a delightfully simple idea. Leave out straws and glue, see what Kay would come up with.

  Uh-huh, right.

An easy invitation to spark creativity
I usually do an activity right alongside Kay because otherwise she doesn't have any interest, or if she does, she doesn't stick with it very long. When I'm doing it with her, she tends to focus better. Plus, it's just fun to do this stuff together.
And so it was with this invitation to create. I set out straws, scissors, glitter glue (from our friends at CraftProjectIdeas.com) and construction paper for her to find when she got up from "rest time" (our nap-time substitute). When I started cutting and gluing, she immediately came over to get in on it too.

Only she never got past the cutting. Straws are so fun to cut - because they make a fun "snap" noise and have the tendency to land on the other side of the room. Kay thinks that is just the greatest thing.

So while I glued, occassionally trying to pull her interest into making letters or shapes or...well, anything...she happily snipped away, even going to the draw to fish out more straws. I thought, Ah, well, at least she's practicing her fine motor skills! (Had to put some kind of positive on my activity fail.)

Another plus - I made some lovely art with straws and glitter glue!
