I like to sneak in learning when I can. And by "sneak in", I simply mean integrate it into our day to day life. Learning something seems much more relevant when we can see how we're going to use it real life. (Geometry, anyone?)

One of the things I do to "sneak in" writing practice is...wait for it... greeting cards !
We make it into a "thing", getting out the markers, stickers and cards so that Kay can decorate them anyway she likes.
At Walmart, Hallmark has a new line of cards starting at 47 cents (and a bunch for just 97 cents too!) - that's even cheaper than the dollar store. Woot-woot!

With Aunt Esther's birthday coming up, we decided to give her flowers. Oh, not the usual kind that will just die in a week - the wonderfully kid-made kind! We first went to pick up a card at WalMart (Kay picked one with glitter that's actually for a little girl - but it's the thought that counts, right? - and I stocked up on some while we were there!)
Then we went home and got to work.
What we used: Plastic container, pipe cleaners, coffee filters, markers, spray bottle with water, foam stickers
This art technique is one of Kay's favorite (I'm pretty sure it has more to do with the use of the spray bottle than any artistic merits). We've even made butterflies this way too! We made random designs on coffee filters with markers and then spritzed them with some water. When they dry, they look pretty awesome!

Then we poked a pipe cleaner in the middle of the coffee filter flower, and twist the end. Finally, for some extra pizzazz, we decorated the plastic bottle vase with some "love" stickers.
Who in your life would be delighted with a real-not-virtual card?
