Easy wand craft and trick-or-treat bag fit for a princess! #JuniorCelebrates #shop
It's that time of year - have your kids started thinking about their Halloween costume yet? We used Disney Junior as inspiration for some fun pretend play ideas!
In years past, Kay would change her mind about what she wanted to dress up as for Halloween about, oh, twenty times before the actual night arrive. But not this year. She's had her costume-of-choice picked out since August: princess.
So, with weeks to go before the Big Night, and an excited 5-year-old by my side, we headed to WalMart.
The aisle was stacked with costumes - an imagination-lover's dream. We bypassed the butterflies and fairies and superheroes until we finally found...Sofia the First. Jackpot!

The clincher for Kay was the accompanying amulet; the dress wasn't nearly as important as the magic necklace that, she was sure, would let her talk to animals just like Sofia on the Disney Junior show!

We still had 3 weeks to go until Halloween. Do you have any idea how long three weeks are to a 5-year-old? VERY long! So she's been allowed to wear it for pretend play - and we've made a few accessories to go with it.

The day after we bought the costume, I woke up at 6am to hear footsteps in my room and then, "Mommy, can I be Sofia now?" Biting back a retort about how princesses sleep late, it began.

Now every princesses needs a wand, right? If you've read this blog with any regularity, you know I like my crafts nice and simple. Using a dowel, colorful strips of ribbon, and tacky glue that was probably older than Kay herself (apparently tacky glue is the cockroach of the adhesive world!) we put together a wand fit for a princess.

I tied the strips of ribbon onto the dowel, pushed them down a little, added tacky glue to the top of the stick, and then pushed the ribbons over the glue. It held surprisingly well - well enough to hold up to Kay's rough handling (and that's saying something!).
While we were at WalMart I spotted a pumpkin-decorating kit containing felt stickers in cute faces. I envisioned this on a trick-or-treat bag and had to snatch it up. We added the stickers to a bag we got at the dollar store and - viola! - instant trick-or-treat bag! I had spare felt at hand to make shapes for the face as well, but the stickers were so much easier that the felt sheets sat unused. Still, if you don't have the stickers, regular felt cut into some simple shapes would make a cute face as well.

Since getting her new costume, her father and I have had the privilege of taking a princess out to breakfast and to the playground and having a very special princess dinner. Now how many people can say that?!
