Pirate Treasure Hunt

Don't you love when you have an activity when you get to talk like a pirate? (Wait, I'm not the only one, right?!)
Arghh! There's treasure in them hills! Fun pretend play for preschoolers
This month's Poppins Book Nook theme was Pirates, and we had fun with it. We read "Do Pirates Take Baths" by Kathy Tucker, a humorous book with amusing pictures. (We loved the illustration of them sleeping with their teddies the best!)
Then I set up a simple coin ("treasure") hunt in moon sand. Kay liked that, but it didn't feel like enough. (Okay, I just wanted to do more pirate-y things!)

So I made a treasure map. Kay likes to find any paper rolled up like a parchment scroll and pretend it's a map, so I thought she'd like this activity. I was going to draw the real backyard and see how she did following the map, but then I let my imagination take over and instead drew a map with trees, mountains and volcanoes. (Our yard actually has only one of those things, and <hint> it's not the volcano!)

We pretended to creep past an invisible volcano and trudged through the Friendly Forest. Kay had to balance her way across the bridge, careful not to fall into the imaginary water with the hungry imaginary creatures, and then climb atop Rock Mountain, an over-sized rock in our yard.

She came out while I was trying to draw it (note the word trying!) and knew instantly what it was. She was game. I buried some "treasure" in the sand box, handed over the map and got in character with my best pirate voice. (Side note: We recently visited Story Land in New Hampshire, which has a pirate area and even a pirate ship ride, so I had some good inspiration. Oddly, my pirate voice comes out sounding Irish.)

Finally she made her way to the sand (box), where "X marks the spot" and her treasure awaited her.
