Disclosure: We received these Word and Number Swatters from Oriental Trading to facilitate this series on getting ready for kindergarten through play. All opinions and ideas are our own.
Kay likes to hit things. (Drums are a perennial favorite!)
So when thinking of ways to make learning sight words more fun, a "sight word slap" game was definitely at the top of the list. These swatters from Oriental Trading are just perfect for this.

I wrote some simple sight words we've been working on on a large piece of paper. We did this twice the first day - once with the paper hanging on the wall and once with it on the floor. The wall-hanging version was the favorite, because it allows for a satisfying "smack" noise that raised the fun-factor considerably for this preschooler!
My plan was: I'd call out a word, Kay would "slap" it, and then she could call out a word for me to find.
Her plan was: she's say the word, slap it, and then do it again, cutting me out completely. Fine by me. The goal was the words, and that was accomplished.

This is such a quick game to set up. I left it hanging on the wall when we were done, and she went back to it throughout the day.
Definitely a "hit" (get it?!).

What we're working on here:
- simple sight word recognition
- hand-eye coordination
