If Kay could do all her learning with cars and/or shaving cream, she would be one happy 5-year-old!
We just started working with the [affiliate link] Bob early reader books so I thought it would be fun to practice the 4 words in the first book by having sight word car races.
The four words we were working on were on, Sam, Mat and sat. (Shakepeare it is not.) So I wrote those words on little pieces of paper and taped them to the roof of 4 different cars. Sat she already knows, so there was really only 3 to work on.
I set up a simple wooden ramp outside (anything with an incline would work great, a cardboard box - even a slide!) and the races were on.

We used the sight words as the car's name.
"Who is racing? Sat and Sam!
And sat wins.
Boy, Sam is slow as molasses!"
This held her interest for awhile, until she got bored with the given names and wanted to make up her own. So she peeled off the tape and renamed the cars - Dandy, Breanna and Bob.

- You can also use cars to work on letter recognition and upper- and lower-case matching!
