Magic Milk Science for Preschoolers

Colorful milk science experiment for preschoolers
"Magic Milk" is one of those cool experiments that you see but think they must be too complicated. That's what I thought, anyway. But after we did the pepper experiment, I figured this was similar and must be similarly easy. It was. But much prettier!

You will need: Milk (whole works best, I hear, but you can make do with 2 percent)
                      Food coloring
Dish soap (we used Gain, but brand isn't important)
                      Cotton swab
                      Dish
Our milk happened to be expired (oops!) but it didn't affect the experiment any. We poured it into the dish (obviously you'll want one with a little depth to it) and dripped in about 3 squirts of each color of food coloring, around the center of the plate. (Don't mix them!)

Then you add a dab of the dish soap to the cotton swab and put it right in the center of all the color.

  Awesome, right?

The colors will "jump" away from the dish soap. And unlike with the pepper experiment, you can dip the swab in again and again and the colors will still jump away, mixing together in beautiful swirls.

Finally, at the end, Kay was able to mix and swirl all she wanted.

(It reminds me of Van Gogh's "Starry Night." Doesn't that make it sound like I know about art? Trust me, I don't!)

I can say this was certainly one of the most lovely experiments we have done!
