I've been putting off our next attempt at a volcano until we could do it outside. I also wanted to have an ample supply of vinegar on hand. Well, both things fell into place this week, and I even found our toy dinosaurs, so volcano time it was!
I saw this version from The Joy of Boys and loved how simple it was to make the volcano look "real". For each eruption, we used 1/2 cup of vinegar, 3-5 squirts of red food coloring, and a teaspoon of baking soda. Kay also wore goggles and gloves for safety (hey, lava can be dangerous, you know!).
We carried everything outside, and after showing her the measurements, I let Kay take over. (Had to bite my tongue sometimes, but I managed!) She wanted to put the dinosaurs in the volcano (poor little guys!).
She loved measuring, even though some steps she needed a reminder about, but by the end she was like an old pro! I'm convinced she would have continued on for hours if our vinegar supply hadn't run out. (1 whole bottle of vinegar - gone in 10 minutes or less!)
Even when the explosion fun was over, the dinosaurs (rescued from inside the volcano) had fun dancing in the lava. (Hey, it could happen!)
