Today is International Respect for Chickens Day, a day to raise awareness about these wonderful creatures. In celebration, Vegan Publishers has kindly sent me this book to review. All opinions are my own.
Meet Dave.
Dave is an alien who just *loves* chickens. And he can't understand why the humans on our crazy planet eat them.
Written and illustrated by Carlos Patino, "Dave Loves Chickens" focuses on how awesome chickens are. The bright, bold illustrations are a fun companion to the spare, rhyming text. Some of the rhymes are a bit of a stretch ("They enjoy a dust bath...while you're doing some math"?). But the facts about chickens are introduced in an interesting - never boring - way.

Even I learned something (did you know some chickens lay colored eggs?).
Kay loved Dave, but she has a thing for aliens with many eyes anyway.
While Dave is obviously a vegetarian, there is no blame placed on those who aren't. It's merely put out there as a question - why do you eat meat? It may just get you thinking about it yourself. This story is a great way to reinforce a message of compassion for all living creatures - and that's the true meaning behind this book!
