I've wanted to try mirror play for awhile. I love the idea of it giving a whole different perspective on an otherwise routine activity. And then I read a post from Racheous (not the exact post I found, but actually closer to what we did!) on a day when I had an unusual amount of ambition, so I set everything up and gave it a try.
I lay an old mirror we have on Kay's little picnic table, and added 2 big and small glass gems, a couple of river stones, colored salt, and a couple of seashells. There was also an egg carton-type thing that I found in the garage. At first she wasn't hesitant to pour the salt directly on the mirror, but I assured her that it was okay. Then she said, "Can you show me how to play with this?" I explained that there were no rules, she could play with it however she wanted. Oh, okay. She poured the salt into the egg carton-thing (wish I knew the real name of it!) and added a gem to each hole. transferring the salt from the container to the cups to the sea shells.
Eventually she did dump the salt on the mirror, and made shapes in it with her finger. She tried to make a K, a letter she often has difficulty writing, so I showed her how to make it with salt and she went K-crazy. Little K's written in the salt all over the mirror! And the surprise part was that they actually came out looking like Ks!
Surprisingly, she wasn't overly impressed with the mirror itself. She played as if it was just any other surface. I, on the other hand, was fascinated with the reflection of the colorful fall trees in the mirror and snapped a bunch of pictures!
