This guest post from Tina Demos Coves shows how to make your own pom poms and turn them into an Easter decoration...or even garland! All children should be supervised when using scissors.
And over to Tina...
Pom-poms are universally loved. Soft, colorful and safe. As far as the perfect activity goes, these certainly tick all the boxes and make for a great toy or gift. And here’s the bonus, they are so easy to make and versatile.
Make them as Christmas decorations to dress a tree, decorate them for Halloween or trim them into an Easter egg shape.
That’s what we are going to today with these simple steps. Let’s get cracking.

What you'll need:
- Balls of wool – it can be any color you like
- One short piece of cut wool (or string) approximately 20 cm long for each pom-pom you make (this is used to tie it together)
- A pair of scissors – child safe if possible
- Your hand or that of an excited helper
- An old egg carton box (optional)
- Decorations (optional)
- Needle and thread (optional for bonus idea – see at end)
Time to create:
- Take your wool and find the end. Using three fingers for an adult or four fingers for a child, start to wrap the wool around and around the middle knuckles until you have a thick bundle.
- Carefully slide the wool off the fingers and tie one single piece of wool or string (the 20cm long piece you had prepared earlier) around the middle of the bundle. Make sure it is nice and tight.
- Using scissors, snip the end loops of the wool ball on both sides.
- Once cut your pom-pom will start to take shape. Gently fluff it out until it is in a nice round ball.
Now, of course you can stop here, but to make it into an Easter egg pom-pom you will need to continue.
Creating an Easter pom pom:
To turn your newly created pom-pom into an Easter themed creation there are a couple of additional steps.
Repeat with the same, or different colored wool to make lots of pom-poms to fill up the carton. If you happen to have some googly eyes it would be fun to add onto the eggs for a bit of decoration.
- Trim the pom-pom into an Easter egg shape. Be as rough as you need to. There are no rules here.
- Place into an old egg carton box.

Bonus: Here’s a further idea. Trim your round pom-poms a little smaller and with an adult's help, thread them together in a row using a needle and thread (you can use string or even fishing line – the thinner the better), until you have a garland or necklace of the desired length.
Easter craft ideas are so much fun and this one is no exception. And the best part they are safe to play with and can be used all year round and adjusted to suit any theme. Have fun
