Inspired by Hands on: as we grow's Valentine scavenger hunt, we tried out a version of our own. Using sticky Post-It notes (pink, for Valentine's Day - and because that's the color I had...) I cut out heart shapes and numbered them 1-10. Then I quickly stuck them around the house and told Kay the plan: find the hearts and put them in order. While Kay simply loves scavenger hunts, I also wanted to see how she was coming along with recognizing the numbers and putting them in order (she was still getting 6 and 9 confused last time I noticed).
She searched around, grabbing a heart when she found one and announcing which one it was (number recognition - check!). When she got stuck, she went to the table to see what numbers she was missing. She put the 1 first and the 10 last, and noticed she was still missing several numbers. Off to search again. She wanted extra hints and I gave her a few, but honestly I forgot where I hid most of them so she was on her own!
Finally she found them all and easily ordered them 1-10. (Number sequencing - check!)
Variations:
This would also be a fun name game, too, with the letters of the child's name hidden and needing to be put in order.
The shape is really irrelevant. Use circle, triangles - just use the uncut square Post-It notes! The excitement is in the thrill of the hunt. I only choose hearts because it's close to Valentine's Day!
