Kay got a magnet set for Christmas from Santa and has been enjoying just playing with it on her own. She thinks it's 'magic' when one magnet sticks to another and she can hold it up without either of them falling to the floor. Since she's so interested in the magnets, I have a few things we'll be doing with them. This first one is probably the simplest. I cut a piece of paper in half and wrote "magnetic?" with a smiley face on one, and the same word with a sad face on the other.
Then I went around the house tossing in random things, some I knew would be magnetic, some I knew would certainly not be (domino? stuffed toy?)
She got the idea quickly and used her magnetic wand to see what would stick. I encouraged her to put the ones that did or didn't stick on the corresponding paper.
And so it went along, no real surprises, until she came to the pipe cleaner. She was surprised to find that the magnet wand clung on to it. "Do you know why? These must be metal under the fuzzy part!" I exclaimed. "No," she said seriously, shaking her head. "It's just magic."
