I was excited to be chosen to participate in the Mom Trusted Kids Craft Blogger Challenge. They send you a packet of craft supplies and you and your child(ren) come up with a craft from them. But when I first opened the package, I was temporarily stumped. Feathers, pipe cleaners and tissue paper squares. Hmm... Until I saw the beautiful bird ornaments from My Nearest and Dearest and knew what we were going to do! We're on a homemade ornament kick this year, so this one fit in perfectly!
Supplies: Scrapbook paper
Feathers
Pipe cleaners
Glue
Tissue paper squares
Before we got started, I showed Kay the supplies and asked her if she had any ideas of what she'd like to make. "Yes, I have a good idea!" she exclaimed, and proceeded to take feathers, smeared more-than-a-little glue on each, and stick it on to a pipe cleaner that had also been dipped in glue. (Can never have too much glue!) She took great pride in giving me detailed instructions on how to do her idea, and I followed her lead. Then we put the creations aside to dry and I brought out the scrapbook paper I had pre-cut into bird shapes.

First thing we did was add a little glitter to the glue, just for something different. We used sponge brushes to spread the glue onto the bird shapes, and then lay the feathers and tissue paper squares to decorate them. Kay loved using the feathers. When she was finished putting them on her bird, she gathered a handful of them to throw in the air like confetti, which was lots of fun until it was time for her to pick them up; that part she didn't like.
With the tissue paper squares, we added a layer of the glitter glue as a finishing touch, which came out nicely. I thought the glue would be too much for the paper, but as it dried it hardened, so it all worked out.
We made a hole in each bird with a hole punch and used the pipe cleaners to hang them on the tree. Kay liked that she figured out how to twist the pipe cleaners so the two ends would stay together and she proudly displayed her ornaments to anyone who came in.
The only thing I would do differently next time would be to use heavier paper. I should have foreseen that scrapbook paper wasn't going to handle gobs of glue too well, but the cute designs overcame my better judgement!
